CKUM 93.5 FM GOES DIGITAL! 26-11-2012
CKUM 93.5 FM makes the change to digital after 40 years with AEQ’s Forum digital broadcast console.

CKUM 93.5 FM has been on the air for more than 40 years and is the campus radio station of the University of Moncton, which is also open to the community and is the oldest French language based campus-community radio station in Atlantic Canada.
The station was launched in 1971 as a closed circuit wired mono network between the buildings on the campus before moving to FM stereo 105.7 at a power of 50 watts in 1981. Since then CKUM has changed frequencies to 93.5 and boosted the power to 250 watts to cover the city and surrounding area. For the past 20 years, CKUM has been using the same analog broadcasting equipment which was nearing the end of its life, which is the when the decision to make the move to digital was made and the AEQ Forum stood out as the console to do the job for it’s compact digital design than can be easily expanded as the dynamics of the station change.
For a station that sees many hosts come and go, it’s essential to have a system that is robust, customizable and easy to use for advanced users and even for the most basic of hosts who don’t have a background in radio.
“We looked at many options for broadcast consoles and the Forum was an easy choice for its’ ease of use and how well it fit into any digital studio environment. For someone transitioning from analog technology, it’s amazing how simple it was for me to install and program the Forum and to be able to have a board with almost 95% less wiring but increased functionality and clarity over our previous system.
We look forward to expanding our station and with a console this robust, it will save us a lot of time in maintenance as well as cutting down on the complexity of training new students on the equipment each year.”
